Archives Visited by the Team

Over the years HOLYLAB team members have visited a vaste range of archives and repositories worldwide. Here they have identified unpublished and sometimes overlooked documents on the history of the Custody of the Holy Land that are at the core of present and future publications by the project.
Such sources focus on threee main areas of research, for which this page wants to provide more detail on the variety of archives and repositories used, with a layered map to emphasize their geographical span.

The Custody in Ottoman Jerusalem

The economic organization and evolution of the Custody between the 17th and 18th centuries are being unveiled through the records preserved in its own archive, while records from the Ottoman Justice Courts of Jerusalem, now kept in different repositories, document the life of the Franciscan community in its interactions outside the monastery, too.
